Finding the Perfect Wedding Cake

As with every other detail of your wedding planning, choosing your wedding cake can be a lot less daunting and stressful if you do a little research before embarking on the cake journey...

A great place to start is to compile a scrapbook or file of your favourite ideas - this will also be useful to take with you when you start talking to prospective cake makers. Looking through magazines and the internet for real weddings is another great place to start - you can see how couples have personalised their wedding cake to suit and the various ways they have worked it in with their theme.


The next step is to ask friends and family if they have any recommendations of cake makers/designers that they may have used in the past or seen/tasted their work and been impressed. Bridal expos and bridal magazines are another good source and also asking your reception venue if they have a list of recommended cake makers.


Before you venture out to meet with the cake makers it's a good idea to be prepared for the questions they will ask you:
• The date of your wedding
• Your theme, flowers and colour palette
• The number of guests you are expecting
• What is your cake budget?
• Will you be serving the cake to your guests as dessert or packaging pieces for them to take home?
• Will you be keeping one of the cake layers for your first anniversary?


It is also a good idea to jot down questions to ask the prospective cake makers:
• Can we see a portfolio of your previous work?
• Is it possible to have a tasting of your various wedding cake flavours and fillings?
• Are you to create a custom wedding cake to suit our theme or are there a set number of designs and styles from which we can choose?
• What is your pricing range and is it flexible?
• Do your prices include items such as cake toppers, stands and a cake knife or are they charged as extras?
• If I change flavours or fillings will it change the price?
With a bit of research and planning you'll not only have a cake that looks amazing but also tastes the same...
